A BUILDING THAT TRANSCENDS GENERATIONS
Erected between 1900 and 1925, Nautilus derives its name from the pilot boat King D. Luís gifted to his son, King D. Carlos, on his 15th birthday in 1878. The gift symbolized the passing of King D. Luís’ deep fascination for the ocean to his son.
Nestled quietly behind Praia da Ribeira — also known as Praia dos Pescadores — Nautilus has borne witness to over a century of transformation. Once a humble working beach for fishermen and their boats, Praia dos Pescadores eventually became a favorite destination for royal families and aristocrats, thanks to King D. Carlos’ frequent visits to the shoreline.
Sunbathing became a favored pastime among its aristocratic visitors. This iconic beach hosted a wide variety of activities: sailing, rowing, swimming, and regattas. Even the spectacle of bullfighting once took place here, right on the beach of Praia da Ribeira.
Today, Praça 5 de Outubro, situated right in front of Nautilus, serves as the beating heart of Cascais. It hosts many of the town’s festivities and celebrations, from Christmas and New Year events to the fishermen’s tradition of Festas do Mar, which honors the Procissão Sra. dos Navegantes with vibrant summer concerts.
In 1965, the bronzed statue of D. Pedro I was erected, adding another layer of history to the area.
